The Nigerian Army has opened applications for its Direct Short Service Commission (DSSC) Course 29/2026, inviting qualified Nigerians to apply for commission as officers in specialised fields.
From my experience covering military recruitment exercises over the years, DSSC remains one of the fastest routes for professionals to join the Army as commissioned officers, especially doctors, engineers and technical experts. I verified this latest announcement directly from the Nigerian Army’s official X handle and cross-checked details on the recruitment portal to confirm timelines and requirements.
According to the Army, the DSSC application is open to both civilians and serving military personnel. Vacancies are available in selected corps, including the Nigerian Army Engineers, Signals, Medical Corps, Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, and the Education Corps.
The Army stressed that the application is completely free and must be done online. The portal opens on January 7 and closes on February 4, after which no further entries will be accepted.
Applicants are required to apply through the Nigerian Army recruitment portal. For clarification and assistance, the Army provided two helplines — 08179269294 and 08109959294 — available daily from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
The DSSC scheme is designed to bring in skilled professionals who can offer specialised services within the Army, rather than going through conventional combat-focused entry routes.
On eligibility, the Army stated that applicants must be Nigerian citizens by birth and between 20 and 32 years old as of March 30. Medical consultants are allowed up to 40 years of age.
Candidates must also be medically, mentally and physically fit, in line with Army standards. Minimum height requirements are 1.68 metres for men and 1.65 metres for women.
The Army emphasised strict character requirements. Applicants must have no criminal record, must not belong to cults or secret societies, and must not have tattoos or body inscriptions.
Serving military personnel applying for DSSC must be free from disciplinary cases and present formal endorsement from their Commanding Officer.
On education, applicants must possess at least a first degree with a minimum of Second Class Lower Division or an HND with Upper Credit from a recognised institution, depending on the corps. Qualifications must have been obtained between 2011 and 2025.
Required documents include a birth certificate or age declaration, state of origin certificate, and a valid NYSC discharge or exemption certificate. Original academic certificates will be demanded during selection.
Professionals such as doctors, engineers and educators must also be fully registered with their relevant statutory bodies recognised under Nigerian law at the point of commissioning.
Applicants are also expected to present two reputable referees from their state of origin. Acceptable referees include senior military officers not below the rank of lieutenant colonel, assistant commissioners of police and above, or senior local government officials.
The referees must endorse the application and submit passport photographs, while applicants are required to provide contact details of their parents, guardians and next of kin.
Beyond the general requirements, the Army noted that each corps has specific professional criteria. Engineers, medical personnel and education specialists must meet discipline-specific academic and professional standards before they can be considered.
From past recruitment cycles I have monitored, candidates who carefully follow instructions and ensure their documents are complete stand a far better chance of progressing to the next stage.
